About me

How did I go from Clueless to Confident around Firearms?

My father always had guns around, but I never really knew anything about them.  My dad would take me to the range, hand me a loaded gun, I would shoot some targets, then hand it back to him.  This only happened  a handful of times.  I never knew how to load or unload a gun.

When I met my husband in college, he had a pistol permit so I decided to get one too.  Funny thing was we rarely went shooting and when we did, it was pretty much the same thing.  He would hand me a gun, I would shoot, and then I would hand it back to him.

In 2007 we moved and my pistol permit expired to the point that I needed to take the class over again.  I was all excited because this was going to be my first real class and I couldn’t wait!  When I got there I had such high hopes that now I was really going to learn all about guns and everything I needed to know.  Eight hours later, I left with the feeling of, “That’s it?”  I passed the class, I shot my targets, but I didn’t really feel any more confident than before.

In 2007, I found myself home with two small children.  I knew I didn’t want to become the statistic of people who harm themselves with their own firearms.  Luckily my husband had friends at the range who would take me shooting and help me while he watched the kids.  I knew I wanted/needed more training.  I started searching for some kind of basic pistol courses in the area.  All I could find were full weekend or full week classes that I would need to travel too, that were hundreds of dollars. With two small children in the home, it made it very hard to be able to get to training.  As I read the course descriptions, I wasn’t sure if I even met the basic skills needed to attend any of the courses I was looking at.

I still remember that first time of being able to pack my own bag and head to the range.  I was so excited and confident!  I want to share that feeling with everyone that wants to learn.  I want to let other people learn that confidence that comes with mastering another skill.  I have been learning and training ever since!  One of the best things about training is that if I don’t know the answer you are looking for, I probably know someone who does. t A Great Start Shooting School I look to give you a place to start to build your confidence and open the possibilities to you.

Trainers who I have worked with

Nothing I teach you is my own. I have learned from many great instructors over the years. If you get a chance to train with or utilize their training materials, I highly suggest that you do! This is probably not an exhaustive list, but it’s a start and I try an expand it every year.

Babes with Bullets was the 1st camp I ever went to that was an all ladies event. It was also my 1st multi day training event. The trainers here are all world class and internationally known in their sports.  Here are the instructors that I have had the pleasure to work with directly: Kay Clark Miculek, Lisa Munson, Sheila Brey, Lena Miculek, and Debbie Keehart.

These are the ones I could think of off the top of my head, there are more. Always keep training!

Manny Bragg

From Pro Shooting Sports.

Jay Hirsberg

I was lucky enough to train with Jay, prior to him leaving New England.  Because of him, I even had a chance to train with Max Michel for a day.

Spector tactical

Was one of the 1st local training I did here in CT. They train all over the state.

NRA Instructor and Training Counselor Certifications

I have been an instructor since 2012 and a training counselor since 2019.

Operation Specific Training

My last training visit to Sig Academy was to work with this group. I always enjoy learning from the instructors and learning how they teach. They travel all over the country. Check them out and see if they are coming to a range near you.

Tatiana Whitlock

She is based in Maine, but I have been able to work with her at A Girl & A Gun Conference in Texas multiple times. When attending one of her concealed carry classes, my favorite quote from her as she described the best clothes to conceal carry, “Is your life worth a wardrobe change?”

IDPA Safety Officer Certification

IDPA was my 1st shooting sport and my 1st certification in 2011.

Kathy Jackson

Author of one of my favorite books, “The Cornered Cat”. You can grab it on Amazon or can pick up a copy here when you come for a lesson.

Caleb Causey

From Lone Star Medics – If you have met Caleb and trained with him you will know his quote, “Drink Water” He is also why I have an actual first aid kit with me almost everywhere I go.

Mike Seeklander

Amazing FREE training on FB weekly. He also has a few books that we work out of here at the school. Check out his offerings at his website.  He also has a FB Group that has a ton of free training in it.
